ABOUT THE WINGWAY CONSORTIUM
To respond to emerging needs and use cases in logistics and supply chain operations, Skymantics joined the WINGWAY consortium led by the regional clusters of aeronautics (AERA) and logistics (ALIA) of Aragón, Spain. Other partners include Gesprolog, Magline Composites y Sistemas, Dronica Valley, and Cotrali.
The WINGWAY Consortium received funding support from the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism to demonstrate the feasibility of Uncrewed Airspace Systems (UAS) to support logistics operations. This is the first phase of an endeavor that is expected to bring full integration of drones into the end-to-end supply chain of regional deliveries.
The future of logistics
The region of Aragón in Northeast Spain is ideally positioned for supply chain activities. Located in the crossroads of major routes, serviced by a major freight airport (Zaragoza) and equipped with vast spaces and modern infrastructure, this area is quickly becoming a major hub for European trade. The WINGWAY consortium was formed with the ambition to create the future of logistics by integration of drones into multimodal supply chains combining surface and air deliveries to access more destinations, faster, in a more effective and sustainable way. Drone last-mile delivery is expected as a solution for fast distribution of high-value supplies in remote locations.
Full digitalization and automation of drone logistics operations
The role of Skymantics in WINGWAY is to accelerate digital transformation in this new paradigm of drone-integrated logistics operations. We prototyped a logistics planning control center that allows the logistics operator to select the most economically viable combination of terrestrial and aerial routes, hub intermodality at vertiports, and in-time deliveries. The planning tool was based on our geospatial routing stack. Learn more about our Advanced Routing Engine.
In addition, Skymantics is developing Reinforcement Learning Artificial Intelligence algorithms to automate the optimization of vertiport location, route combinations, and fleet managements, to deliver a complete logistics planning workflow.
