Washington, DC – 2/6/2025 – Skymantics, LLC is proud to support the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in its efforts to protect taxpayer privacy through artificial intelligence (AI)-generated synthetic data.
For the past three years, Skymantics has worked with the IRS on SimoN (Simulation of the Nation)—a project that creates high-quality synthetic data to replace real taxpayer data in system testing, software development, and AI training. This means that IRS technology can be improved and modernized without using any real taxpayer information.
At no point has Skymantics staff ever seen, accessed, or handled any real taxpayer data, including personally identifiable information (PII). The synthetic data used in SimoN is created using publicly available sources, such as the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This ensures the data for software testing across the IRS mimics real-world patterns without exposing any actual taxpayer records. The result of this effort has been outstanding in that the synthetic data tooling is now capable of simulating producing tens of millions of tax returns with thousands of permutations of data. This technology has vast applications across the federal government to reduce and eliminate risk of privacy breaches due to the potential improper handling of sensitive taxpayer data.
