The status of geospatial data

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have become ubiquitous tools that provide value across all industries and application domains. By leveraging the power of location data, entities can now better manage their assets, observe localized effects of phenomena such as climate change, and plan strategically for actions dependent on coverage areas.


New developments in Open Data and data interoperability are exponentially increasing the capabilities to retrieve and share geospatial data in an open environment. Standards entities such as the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), are working in this direction to make geospatial data aligned with the FAIR principles:

The future of GIS is bright, with new capabilities to produce immersive experiences, and most importantly with establishment of new connections to indoor, outdoor, and non-geographic data sources. We are quickly reaching the goal when virtually everything can be represented and actioned in a GIS tool.

Supporting the geospatial community

Since 2015, Skymantics has been an active part of the geospatial community. As members of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), pygeoapi and pgRouting communities, Skymantics takes a leading role in the development of standards and code basis for interoperability and exchangeability of geospatial information across industries (defense, transportation, emergency, aviation).

Skymantics is a pioneer in the area of interoperable routing standards. The Skymantics Universal Routing Engine (SURE) is a powerful and versatile tool that has been used in a number of research pilots and application domain projects. Learn more about our advanced routing engine.

We also make use of interoperable geospatial data to solve the problems for first responders and local authorities in disaster management. Our solutions interoperate with Earth Observation, sensor, and risk indicator sources to derive best actions for first responders to reach disaster areas, and for local authorities to organize evacuation of populations. We support offline data repositories and applications in degraded communication environments.

Skymantics has also been innovating in the application of geospatial standards to data exchange formats in Air Traffic Management. Our contributions to 3D GeoVolumes and JSON format with Features and Geometries open a myriad of opportunities to encode rich geospatial attributes for new airspace entrants (UTM and AAM). These new features allow novel capabilities in the areas of Command and Control, geofencing, and mission route planning.
